Shape Sorting Toys

Shape Sorting Toys Introduction
Shape sorting toys for toddlers, or shape sorters, will provide tons of fun, educational, and entertaining experience for both, kids and parents. When it comes to early child development, shape sorters are great for fine tuning of motor skills in toddlers. Shape sorting toy concept is very simple. Basically, toddlers are presented with a toy base with openings, and several matching objects. Each object can be inserted only in a specific opening, with a matching shape. In addition to shapes, objects are also color coded. Since the full color and shape recognition ability is established around 18 months, this toy’s utility can start playing important role in toddler’s life leading into the second year of his or her life. Our son started playing shape and color sorters around 16 months, while reaching full mastery of it around his second birthday.

This high quality, hardwood, bright colored shape sorting toy by Melissa and Doug is one of the most ergonomically friendly shape sorters in the market today. This shape sorting toy consists of twelve chunky blocks and one solid cube with holes. One thing about this toy that one might consider before purchasing, which I am listing as toy’s cons. A potential issue is that the lid that comes with this shape sorting toy might not stay on. If the toy is not being transported frequently, this might be OK. Overall, this is still an excellent shape sorting toy.
Shape Sorting Toys Development Areas
I believe shape sorting toys are must have toys for every toddler, as they promote and enhance various abilities, skills and essential areas of early child development. These areas of positive impact include: enhanced motor skills, better color recognition, more optimized shape recognition, better general object categorization, improved hand-eye coordination, creative play, strengthened problem solving skills, better understanding of cause and effect, and the overall understanding of the object permanence concept.
Best Shape Sorting Toys
In the section below, I reviewed three best shape sorting toys. All of these three toys are made by reputable toy manufacturers and out of three distinctly different materials to accommodate different preferences: plastic (Green Toys), rubber (Lauri Toys) and wood (Melissa and Doug). In this last toy, some shapes can fit through multiple holes, which in essence means that kid might not connect the dots at first which shape is designed for which opening. However, keep in mind that toy with more than one right answer might be educational on a different level. This is something we are encouraging our son to do more often – search for all possible answers.
